So…earlier today, I realized something about that god damned
ridiculous “ah wow woah its a HOLE“ flavor text. I always assumed it was
just a Goof, but…

It’s formatted in the exact same way as “Ball Game“ is on the red flag text.

The
red flag lists off each virtue associated with each of the six dead
humans, capitalized and highlighted in their souls’ corresponding
colors. Then it formats “ball game“ in the same way as the virtues :
capitalized, and highlighted in the color of Frisk’s soul. At the same time, the scare quotes around the phrase suggest that it’s just a metaphor or cipher for the red soul’s actual trait. That

would make sense, seeing as ‘ball game’ is not a personality trait or ideal.

So… “Hole.“ Its formatting

links it to the red flag “virtue list” text in general, and to the red
soul specifically. Yet… it’s not associated with the red flag, or
indeed any Ball Game outcome… because it’s the description for an empty hole. One with no ball or flag in it.

Unlike the other soul colors, there are two children associated with the red soul. One of those children is the one we play as. The other one is dead. And unlike the rest of the dead human children, who now exist as just their souls…

…they are currently ‘empty inside.’ Unlike Frisk, there is no “ball“ in the “hole.“
